A medical device that switches on isn't the same as a medical device you can trust. Calibration is what proves the numbers on the screen are genuinely accurate — and in healthcare, those numbers drive decisions. Here's why regular calibration isn't optional, and how to get it right.
What calibration actually is
Calibration compares a device's readings against a known, traceable standard, then adjusts it so it measures correctly. Think of it as proving — with evidence — that a blood-pressure monitor, ECG, scale, thermometer or ESU is telling the truth. The output is a calibration certificate you can show an auditor.
Inaccurate readings put patients at risk
Devices drift gradually with use, transport, temperature and age. A monitor reading a few points off, a scale that's out by half a kilogram, or a thermometer a degree adrift can quietly change a diagnosis, a drug dose or a treatment decision. Calibration removes that risk before it reaches a patient.
It's a compliance requirement, not a nice-to-have
For inspections and accreditation, "we think it's fine" is not an answer — auditors want certificates. Working with a SAHPRA-registered, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 9001:2015 certified provider means your calibration is documented to a recognised standard and your paperwork holds up.

How often should you calibrate?
- At least annually for most diagnostic equipment (follow the manufacturer's interval where it's shorter)
- After any repair that could affect measurement accuracy
- After a move or transport, which can knock sensitive devices out
- If readings look off or a device has taken a knock
The simplest approach is a scheduled programme so nothing ever lapses — built into a maintenance contract, you don't have to track it yourself.
